I am adopted and I work with a number of people who were also adopted. There's one thing to say about adoption, today: it is NOTHING like it used to be. At one time, young women were giving up their unplanned children more readily - they realized that they were either emotionally, financially, or physically unprepared to be an effective parent. Today, most children available for adoption have multiple special needs, unless one wishes to work out some legal private agreement which can cost tens of thousands. The final resort is to seek a child from another country - this has its own issues, as most of the "adoptable" infants/children in these countries are raised in warehouse environments that are devoid (COMPLETELY LACKING) of human contact and nurturing. The long-term ramifications of this early exposure is incalculable and impossible to predict in severity.

The fear of childbith pain is not unusual. My ex-sister-in-law used to love describing how horribly painful her experiences were. When it came my time to deliver, I refused to give in to fear and, though the first one nearly took both of our lives, I lived to talk about it. Consider your worst menstrual cramps - that's about it. And, the "pain of childbirth" is temporary and will not be an ongoing thing. An average duration might be 12 to 14 hours? No big deal.

However, if you do not want children or do not really want to be a parent, by all means, make this known. As for "losing" a man who insists upon producing his own offspring? Well, I've become far too old and cynical and would strongly castigate him for his arrogance. Does this mean that, if producing an offspring "the Old Fashioned Way" proved unlikely that he would expect YOU to endure months (even YEARS) of harmful, damaging "fertility therapy?" Please...I'll stop there.
