I did clay baths last year for mercury and got a lot of silver/black specks in the clay. Not sure why you would get brown if you have mercury, but I don't know how they work. You could always do a foot bath with clay if you aren't convinced by the pads. My sense of smell was 100% better after that first clay bath. It was amazing.
