Plasticat,
You have certainly had a lot to bear, haven't you?
Would it be possible to change your focus for a while?
I wouldn't suggest that you try NOT to think about it...that would be the same as trying NOT to do anything...like smiling. Trying NOT to smile always makes you think of the opposite.
'Don't' is a funny word.
Better to give it a rest, for a while...concentrate on something else.
When I fell on my face, my husband was embarrassed to even take me to Emergency, for stitches. He was shy someone might think he had beaten me...which would be impossible, given his gentle care of me.
As for my own attitude, I found I had no desire to look in mirrors! Others might have to look at me, but I didn't. I just forgot about my appearance for the few weeks left of healing my sore leg wound where I had crushed a bundle of muscles.
I know you don't want to do any 'spiritual' stuff, but maybe it isn't necessary.
Our hands, and other parts, give off and take in electrical energy. Perhaps you could limit your attentions to holding your hands about 2" from your face, while resting, for five minutes, each day. Then go on to do other things you love for the rest of your time.
If there is no such thing as physical electrical energy, then you haven't lost much time, and you will have gained all you accomplish elsewhere.
They say we always get 'more' of what we focus on. We certainly don't want 'more' of our frailties! I'd rather have 'more' of something I like!
What do you really enjoy doing?
Fledgling
