Just read some of the replies which were interesting as I too have serious gum disease.
Just over a week ago, my very loose lower front tooth fell out. Now I know I had a major problem with my front teeth, gums receding badly and deterioration of the bone - showed up in an x-ray. After a bad experience at the dentist I didn't go back. Tooth in question lasted another 3 years. What I found amazing was that when the tooth fell out, the gum underneath had completely healed up. The two adjacent teeth are also loose, particularly one which I estimate will only last a few months if that (well it won't because I'm having the lot extracted and going for full dentures - both my teeth and gums are past their sell-by date LOL). There is no way I would entertain gum grafts or anything like that. I don't think it is necessary and the fact that my gum was completely healed bears that out. I do think a lot of dentists prefer patients to undergo expensive (and painful) procedures. The keyword is profit for them. From my own point of view I've had 50 years of teeth that have given me nothing but problems and look ghastly. I'm actually looking forward to getting the 17 and a bit remaining teeth out and nice, even dentures in their place :)
I'm in the UK by the way.
