Karlin,
"I think that athiests have been too willing to just give the religious their 'freedom to believe' without challenging them about this obvious fantasy."
Yep, freedom to believe indeed. Freedom to believe, freedom not to believe. I think we have made it clear to the world that there are us "minority" who think differently. Now let it be! It's their business who want to believe and what!
We might not agree with them, we might even despise them, but let's not make the same mistake and start a witch hunt on people who differ. The strong are capable of accepting others' decisions, and feeling compassion (like you, Karlin) and sympathy (fine, even pity, if you will) without the unbearable urge to inform them about the "obvious fact of God not existing". Yes I know it's extremely annoying at times when we might "need" to explain ourselves to the religious community, and when their ways are shoved down our throats, but this is exactly the right time to show how us non-believers are actually humans, and we are capable of being kind towards hostility, and handle these situations without offending anyone, making our point clear, but without forcing it. We are wiser, so we can do it.
"I would hope that some intellectuals would take up this project and be able to really show people how and why we tend to create gods."
How about you becoming one of these intellectuals, Karlin? Rather than waiting for the day (never to be seen) that something happens by hoping, by protesting, by itself, how about actively making things happen and affecting the change? Be as enthuasiastic as so far, and you're sure to get to any goal you set!
A bit of OT: I think you Karlin are a very intellectual individual, starting all these mind challenging, thought-provoking topics in the forum. It's a pleasure, as a newcomer, to see a lot of activity for the cause I'm all for. But I reckon we need to be able to keep our cool agains the occasional provokers, and also, remember to spell correctly - we don't want to be taken as a bunch of "lost" angry teenagers, do we? Atheist is indeed spelled with the e in front of the i, although I do know your reason for putting the word that way (a-thiest, how clever, I never thought about it!).
I'll be interested to watch this space for updates!
