I think initially, look at your diet over the years... If it had less than 200 mcg of Iodine a day in it, and just as importantly, if your mother's diet was\is deficient, I would think about adding Iodine rich foods into the diet and see how you react. If it is favorable, maybe up the dose some with more kelp or what have you.
