Lesson Five

Herbal Materia Medica
In this Herbal Materia Medica, The Herbs are listed by their common name first, followed by their Latin name. Next the plant family is listed, then parts used, some of the most important bio-chemical (bio-chemical means "life giving") constituents are listed, therapeutic action, and medical use. A formula in which that herb is used is listed last.

1. Alfalfa (Medicago Sativa) Family: Leguminosae
Parts used: the leaves and flowers
Bio-chemical constituents: Vitamins a, k, d, c, e. calcium, phosphorus, iron, potassium. Eight essential enzymes.
Therapeutic actions: tonic, alterative, anti-pyretic, diuretic.
Medical uses: fatigue (mental and physical), improves digestion and assimilation, increases lean body mass.
Alfalfa is a natural multi-vitamin / multi-mineral, and is used mainly in tonic formulas.
A good tonic formula is made with: Equal parts of Alfalfa (Medicago Sativa) and Yellow Dock (Rumex Cripus).

2. Amaranth (Amaranthus Hybridus) Family: Amaranthaceae
Parts used: All the above ground parts
Bio-chemical constituents: iron, vitamin C, calcium, protein, phosphorus, potassium, thiamine, riboflavin
Therapeutic action: Astringent, nutrient, hemostatic, diuretic, alterative
Medical uses: diarrhea, dysentery, menorrhagia, nose bleeds

Equal parts of Amaranth (Amaranthus Hybridus) and White Oak (Quercus Alba) is a good formula for Dysentery, diarrhea, and internal or external bleeding.
3. Angelica (Angelica Sinensis) Family: Umbelliferae
Part used: the Root
Bio-chemical constituents: Vitamins; a, b-complex, b-12, and e, an essential oil, coumarin.
Therapeutic action: Uterine tonic, antispasmodic, alterative
Medical uses: Anemia, internal bleeding, blood purifier, nourishes female glands, menopause, hot flashes, menstruation regulator, nervousness.
Angelica (Angelica Sinensis) and Damiana (Turnera Aphrodisiaca) is a good menopause formula.
4. Barberry (Berberis Vulgaris) Family: Berberidaleae
Part used: the Bark
Bio-chemical constituents: vitamin c, iron, manganese, phosphorus, berberinea alkaloid, chelidonic acid, resin, tannin, wax.
Therapeutic action: Alterative, hepatic, laxative.
Medical uses: blood purifier, jaundice, liver problems, sore throat, indigestion, gall bladder.
Barberry is an good liver/gall bladder herb, and it stimulates the flow of bile. A good liver formula can be made by using equal parts of Barberry (Berberis Vulgaris) and Dandelion (Taraxacum Officinale).
5. Bayberry (Myrica Cerifera) Family: Myricaceae
Part used: the Bark
Bio-chemical constituents: Vitamin c, volatile oil, starch, albumin, gum, lignin, tannic acid, gallic acid, astringents, resins.
Therapeutic action: astringent, expectorant, diaphoretic.
Medical uses: diarrhea, glands, indigestion, jaundice, flu, fevers, uterine hemorrhage, bleeding, mucus membrane polyps.
Equal parts of powdered Bayberry (Myrica Cerifera) and powered Goldenseal (Hydrastis Canadensis) and used as a snuff, is good for polyps, sinus infection, and nasal bleeding.
6. Bearberry (Arctostaphylos Uva-Ursi) Family: Ericaceae
Part used: the leaves
Bio-chemical constituents: arbutin, iridoids, flavonoids, tannins, volatile oil, ursolic acid, malic acid, gallic acid
Therapeutic action: diuretic, astringent, antiseptic
Medical uses: bladder infections, bright's disease, cystitis, diabetes, gonorrhea, kidney infections, nephritis, spleen, chronic Urethritis, uterine ulceration
Equal parts of Bearberry (Arctostaphylos Uva-Ursi) and Hydrangea (Hydrangea Arborescens) is a good formula for kidney and bladder infections.
7. Billberry (Vaccinium Myrillus) Family: Ericaceae
Parts used: the Fruit
Bio-chemical constituents: bioflavonoids, manganese, phosphorus, iron, zinc, potassium, magnesium, selenium
Therapeutic action: alterative, apparent
Medical uses: night blindness, varicose veins, circulation, eye and vision disorders, cold hands and feet.
Equal parts of Billberry (Vaccinium Myrillus) and Eye bright (Euphrasia Officinalis) makes a good formula for all disorders of the eyes.
Equal parts of Billberry (Vaccinium Myrillus) and Butcher's Broom (Ruscus Aculeatus) is a good formula for varicose veins, Hemorrhoids, Thrombosis, and Arteriosclerosis.
8. Black Cohosh (Cimicfuga Racemosh) Family: Ranonculaceae
Part used: the Root
Bio-chemical constituents: glycosides (actaeine and cimicifugin), racemosin, estrogenic substances, triterpenes, isoferulicalid, tannin, calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, inositol, vitamin a, pantothenil acid, silicon, phosphorus.
Therapeutic action: nervine, anti-spasmodic, diaphoretic, alterative, expectorant, emmenagogue
Medical uses: uterine problems, nervousness, spasms, menstrual troubles, induces labor, neuralgia, asthma, coughs, epilepsy, cramps.
Three parts Black Cohosh (Cimicifuga Racemosa) and one part Lobelia (Lobelia Inflta) is a good formula for epilepsy.
Equal parts of Black Cohosh (Cimicfuga Racemosa) and Angelica (Angelica Sinensis) is a good "female corrective" formula.
9. Blue Cohosh (Caulophyllium Thaictroides) Family: Berberidaceae
Part used: the root
Bio-chemical constituents: alkaloids, a fungicidal saponin, glycosides, gum, starch, salts, phosphoric acid, vitamins e and b-complex, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium.
Therapeutic actions: emmenagogue, antispasmodic, diuretic, diaphoretic, anthelmintic
Medical uses: cramps, epilepsy, induces labor, nerves, uterine problems.
Blue Cohosh (Caulophyllium Thalictroides) and Lobelia (Lobelia Inflata) make a good formula for Epilepsy.

10. Black Walnut (Juglans Nigra) Family: Juglandaceae
Parts used: the nut hulls
Bio-chemical constituents: juglandic acid (nucin) vitamin b complex, manganese, magnesium, silica, protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, potassium, oils, linolenic acid, linoleic acid, isolinolenic acid, oleic acid.
Therapeutic action; laxative, purgative, alterative, astringent, detergent, antiseptic, vermafuge.
Medical uses: Antiseptic (external), stops lactation (internal), parasites (internal), skin rashes, ring worms, worms.
Black Walnut (Juglans Nigra) and Chaparral (Larrea Tridentata) make a good formula for skin dis-eases, used as a fomentation. This same formula is good taken internally is good for worms and parasites.
11. Blue Vervain (Verbena Hastata) Family: Verbenacenae
Parts used: all the above ground parts
Bio-chemical constituents: iridoids, two glycosides (verbenalin and verbenine) essential oil, tannin, bitter principal, mucilage, vitamin c, e, calcium, manganese.
Therapeutic uses: nervine, ememagogue, bitter tonic
Medical uses: irregular or painful menaces, asthma, bladder, bowels, bronchitis, fevers, consumption, convulsions, coughs, insomnia, worms, settles stomach.
Blue Vervain (Verbena Hastata) and Angelica (Angelica Sinensis) is a good female corrective formula.
12. Boneset (Eupatorium Perfoliatum) Family: Compositae
Parts used: all the above ground parts
Bio-Chemical Constituents: sesquiterpene, lactones, eupafolin, eufoliatin, euperfolitin, eufoliatoron,
eperfolin, immunostimulatory polysacoharides, flavoniods, quercetin, kaempferol, hyperosive, astragalin, rutin, eupatorin, diterpenes (dendroidinic acid), hebenolide, volatile oil, vitamin c, calcium, paba, magnesium, potassium
Therapeutic action: febrifige, diaphoretic, expectorant, laxative
Medical uses: chills, colds, fever, flu, typhoid fever, yellow fever
A good herbal formula for all febrile dis-eases is made with equal parts of Boneset (Eupatorium Perfoliatum) and Bay Berry (Myrica Cerifera)
13. Burdock (Arcitium Lappa) Family: Compositae
Parts used: the roots, seed , and leaves
Bio-chemical constituents: essential oil, inulin, vitamin c, iron, protein, carbohydrate, vitamin e, a, p, b-complex, paba, sulphur, silicon, copper, iodine, zinc
Therapeutic action: alterative, diuretic, diaphoretic, nutritive, anti-arthritic,
Medical uses: arthritis, blood purifier, eczema, gout, kidney problems, lungs, rheumatism, skin dis-eases
Burdock (Arcitium Lappa) and Hydrangea (Hydrangea Arborescens) make a good herbal formula for arthritis and gout.
14. Butcher's Broom (Ruscus Aculeatus) Family: Liliaceae
Part used: all the above ground parts
Bio-chemical constituents: Saponal, glycosides, ruslogenins, nerorslogenins
Therapeutic action: anti-inflammatory, diaphoretic, aperient
Medical uses: Arteriosclerosis, hemorrhoids, thrombosis, varicose veins
Butcher's Broom (Ruscus Aculeatus) and Devils Claw (Harpagophytum Procumbens) are a good herbal combination for Arteriosclerosis and vericose veins.

15. Cayenne (Capsicum Frutescens) Family: Solanaceae

Cascara Sgrada (Rhamnus Purshiana) and Fennel (Foeniculum Valgare) are a good herbal combination to normalize colon elimination.

Equal parts of Chamomile (Anthemis Nobilis) and Catnip (Neprta Cataria) is good for diarrhea with cramping, insomnia, nervousness, and hyper-activity of children.
19. Chaparral (Larrea Tridentata) Family: Zygophyllaceae

Equal parts of Cramp Bark (Vibunum Opulus) and Billberry (Vaccinium Myrillus)
make a good formula for leg cramps and peripheral circulation.
24. Damiana (Turnera Aphrodisiaca) Family: Turneraceae

Equal parts of Damiana (Turnera Aphrodisiaca) and False Unicorn (Chamaelirium Luteum) is a good formula for failure to conceive (both male and female must take it). This is also a good menopause formula.

Equal parts of Devil's Claw (Harpagophytum Procumbens) and Butcher's Broom (Ruscus Aculeatus) is a good formula for arteriosclerosis, and poor circulation.
28. Echinacea -Purple Cone Flower- (Echinacea Agustifolia) Family: E, Purpurea
Parts used: the root and flowers
Bio-Chemical constituents: essential oil, polysaccharides, echinacoside, a triglycoside of caffeic acid, vitamins a, e, c, iron, iodine, copper, sulphur, potassium
Therapeutic action: alterative, anti microbial, carminative, stimulant, vulneray
Medical uses: blood builder, blood dis-eases, blood poisoning, blood purifier, infections, lymph glands, and prostrate gland.
A good prostrate formula is made with equal parts of Purple cone Flower (Echinacea Agustifolia) and Saw Palmetto (Serenoa Serrulata).
29. Elder (Sambucus Nigra) Family: Caprifoliaceae
Parts used: the Flowers and berries
Bio- chemical constituents: essential oil, terpenes, glycosides, rutin, quercitrin, mucilage, tannin, vitamins a, c , and bioflavonoids.
Therapeutic action: diaphoretic, alterative.
Medical uses: allergies, asthma, bronchitis, colds, fevers, flu, pneumonia, and sinus congestion.
An very good Flu formula is made from equal parts of Elder (Sambucus Nigra) and Peppermint (Mentha Piperita).
30. Brigham Tea (Ephedra Gerardiana) Family: Ephdraceae
Parts used: the whole plant
Bio-chemical constituents: ephedrine, nor-ephedrine (these are alkaloids).
Therapeutic action: astringent, diaphoretic, stimulant, diuretic, decongestant, anti-rheumatic
Medical uses: blood purifier, bronchitis, bursitis, headaches, kidney problems, asthma, urticaria, hay fever.
Equal parts of Brigham Tea (Ephedra) and Horseradish (Cochlearia Armoracia) is a good formula for nasal and chest congestion.

Equal parts of Eye Bright (Euphrasia Officnalis) and Bill Berry (Vaccinium Myrillus) is a good formula for vision improvement.
32. False Unicorn (Chamae Lirium) Family: Liliaceae

Bio-chemical constituents: saponins, glycosides, chamaelirin, helonin, diosgenin, vitamin C, copper, sulphur
Therapeutic action: uterine tonic, diuretic, vermifuge, anthelmintic, reproductive tonic
Medical uses: colic, coughs, digestive problems, kidneys, miscarriage (prevents), prostate, tape worm.
A good Prostate formula is made with equal parts of Purple Cone Flower (Echinacea Augustifolia) and False Unicorn (Chamaelirium Luteum).
