I have read a great deal of good advise here.

If you live in Southern California, do you have access to citrus trees? Do your neighbors and\or local community have fruit or nut trees in their yards? Where I live in AZ, they are currently harvesting and donating or throwing away tons of residentially grown citrus. In fact some houses pick and box it in huge pallet boxes, leaving it curbside with a "free" citrus signs on it. If available, in and around where you live, maybe you could get some for free or the price of picking them.

Try to get creative as Southern Cal, may offer all kinds of residential food harvest opportunities; dates, nuts, and possibly olives come to mind as well. Try to discover hidden local and possibly "free" whole food sources.

Juicing your raw vegetables and fruits (not together) as has been suggested, I believe would be ideal.
