That's a great idea, Milena! Lettuces/spinach are super cheap, and so are bananas. You can make your own rice milk too - brown rice is cheap. Smoothies are great nourishment.
If you can afford a juicer (I've seen them for like $50 at Walmart) you can juice leafy greens, apples, lemons, and other cheap fruits. These fresh juices are great as breakfast and are very cleansing/nourishing. If not, go the smoothie route.
You can also blend diced apples in a blender to make your own applesauce (flavour with cinnamon, a touch of honey if desired - raw honey if you can afford it, a jar of it is not very expensive, under $10 and lasts a long time).
Here's a rice milk recipe:

And fresh fruits/veggies is season are always cheaper than those not in season. Farmer's markets are great for deals too.
Whole oats are cheap too. Make slow-cooked oatmeal - or just eat the oats raw if you want (tastes pretty good raw when soaked in rice milk). However you want! If you eat bread, make your own healthy whole-grain, no sugar/white flour version. Yams (sweet potatoes) are cheap too, and so is squash (winter squash is in season right now).
Avocados can be cheap too when on sale - I've seen bags of them for $2-3 periodically. Watch for sales. Although an avocado generally costs about $1 each, and can easily be split between 2 people because they're calorie and nutrient dense. So if you have 4 people in your family, that's only $2. Makes a great salad topper :)
Lentils are inexpensive as well. Sprout them and eat them raw or cook them if you want. Same for chickpeas - you can make your own hummus to dip veggies in and spread on pita bread!
You can buy bagged carrots for very, very cheap. Where I live you can get 5 pounds of carrots for like $3-4. You can juice those, cut/peel/shred them and add them to foods, ect. They'll add calories and nourishment. Same goes for beets. Get creative! Veggies are generally pretty cheap, but fruits, especially in winter, are another story. The only stuff that's affordable right now where I live are apples and pears. So eat what you can afford and pig out on fresh fruit from the farmer's market in the summer :)
Please keep us updated on how you and your family do!!
