I can not remember where, but I found this info on a couple of conventional health sites. I also remember that there are other factors such as support from other family members, grievance councelling, etc.

I think that one main principle concerned is that often spouses may tend to be in the same general health, especially as they age. Then again, stress is well known as a killer.
