"Most time when people are being derisive of Science they really mean industry or policies. Not that Science or scientists are perfect."

Brilliant statement. Pure Science is not the enemy. Ideally, science exists for its own sake. Its the manipulation of science, plus greed and politics, that makes it suspect.

Still, I cannot understand why some people embrace such foolish notions, for example, the idea that acids and alkalies create electro-magnetic energy in the stomach, and there is no absorption of nutrients in the body, then totally reject concepts like the Krebs cycle, that is admittedly hard to understand, but is proved and scientifically sound. Why can't alternatives to current modalities still be scientifically sound?

The enemy is not science, or medicine or even pharmaceuticals; much has to do with our attitudes. We want a quick fix, instant success, and carnal comforts. Medicine reacted to our cultural demands by creating drugs and surgeries that treat the symptoms, but generally do not and cannot fix the problem. We refuse to alter our lifestyles, including eating habits, for the sake of good health and longevity. As a culture we have relinquished control of our own bodies and the right to make our own choices and turned them over to science. Science in turn helps produce the products (aspartame, sucralose, DDT, etc) that enriches industry, meets the demands of society, then all too often destroys health and shortens the lifespan of those who demanded the chemical in the first place.

I see little chance of change or improvement in the coming years. First we must be willing, as individuals, to make changes. Hopefully when enough people reject the poisons of modern life, society itself will change and science will help meet the new demands of a more enlightened society. As long as we remain a Pop-tart eating, bug spraying,TV watching couch potato, take-two-pills-and-call-me-in-the-morning culture, there is little hope of positive change. But, this should not all be laid at the feet of science.

As a famous little comic strip possum once said "we have met the enemy, and he is us".
