I'm not a scientist but ENTs have studied those throat things. It is my understanding that they are innocuous bacteria build-up (sometimes from food), but I believe it could be a sign of something additional. On very very very rare occassions it has been associated with cancer.

I'm sure someone else can give a better explanation. :)
