Lesson Two
Emergency Herbs
Herbs work very quickly, efficiently, and consistently, this is especially true in emergency situations where seconds count. Never under estimate the healing power of herbs. Below is a list of herbs that the Master Herbalist should have on hand at all times, they will save lives, don't be with out them, have them in your office, at home, and in your house call kit. These are not just first aid herbs, they are emergency medicine herbs.
1.Cayenne (Capsicum Frutescens) part used: the fruit
Cayenne will stop a heart attack or a stroke, it will normalize blood presser, stop hemorrhage both internal and external, heal bleeding ulcers, prevent shock, treat shock.
2. Lobelia (Lobelia Inflata) part used: the whole herb
Lobelia is good for asthma, epilepsy, food poisoning, lock jaw, pneumonia whooping cough. Always use Lobelia either in a formula with one part lobelia to three parts of another herb, (depending on what the formula is for). Or use 1/3 as much as other herbs (15-20 drops, or 1/3 cup, or one capsule) but still give it three times a day.
3. Juniper Berry (Juniperis Commonus) part used: the berries
Juniper Berry is good for retention of urine, uric acid build up, kidney infections, and it is high in natural insulin.
4. Hawthorn Berry (Crategnus Oxyacantha) parts used: the berries
Hawthorn Berry is good high or low blood presser, cardiac symptoms, hypoglycemia, heart palpitation, arteriosclerosis, and Harding of the arteries.
5. Purple Cone Flower (Echinacea Augustifolia) part used: the whole herb
Purple Cone Flower stimulates the immune response, increases the body's ability to resist infection, stimulates the production of white blood cells, improves lymphatic filtration and drainage, and removes toxins from the blood.
6. Garlic (Allium Sativum) parts used: the bulb
Garlic is good for all infectious disease, even ones that may be resistant to antibiotics. Use it internally, externally, and in its oil form as ear drops.
7. Cascara Sagrada (Rhamnus Purshiana) part used: the bark
Cascara Sagrada promotes peristaltic action there by normalizing the bowel function, it increases the secretions of the stomach, liver, pancreas, and gall bladder.
8. Plantain (Plantago Major) part used: the leaves
Plantain is good for bladder infections, blood poisoning, neuralgia, snake bites, insect stings, and it will draw out splinters.
9. Mullein (Verbascum Thapsus) part used: the leaves
Mullein can be used for bleeding of the lungs or bowel, bronchitis, asthma, coughs, croup, diarrhea, dysentery, insomnia, lymphatic system (use 3 parts mullein to one part lobelia), it relieves pain, its good for pleurisy, sinus congestion, and ear aches (in its oil form).
10. Catnip (Nepeta Cataria) part used: the leaves
Catnip is used for infant colic, pain killer (especially for small children and infants), it will stop diarrhea, it's good for gas, and upset stomach.
11. Elder (Sambucus Nigra) parts used: leaves
Elder is used for asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, flu, and fevers. Elder works best when blended with equal parts of Peppermint.
12. Willow (Salix) part used: the bark
Willow is good for pain (it works like aspirin), it is also good for eczema, fever, headache, and nervousness.
13. Chamomile (Anthemis Nobilis) part used: the flowers
Chamomile cramps both menstrual and stomach, insomnia, hysteria, and nervousness.
14. Cloves (Eugenia Caryophyllata) part used: the flowers
Oil of cloves is good for tooth ache and teething. For teething children mix oil of cloves with an equal amount of olive oil to take the edge off (oil of cloves is strong).
15. Ginger (Zingiber Officinale) part used; the root
Ginger is good for colds, colic, childhood dis-eases, fevers, flu, gas pains, headache, indigestion, morning sickness, toothache, whooping cough, and it settles the stomach
16. Black Cohosh (Cimicifuga Racemosa)
Black Cohosh is good for: asthma, bronchitis, epilepsy, high blood pressure, hormone balance, menopause, menstrual problems, St. Vitus dance, tuberculosis, and whooping cough.
17. Milk Thistle (Silybum Marianum) part used: the seed
Milk Thistle protects, rejuvenates, and restores the liver. It can be used in the treatment of poisoning including mushroom, and chemotherapy
18. Hydrangea (Hydrangea Arborescens) part used: the root
Hydrangea is good for bladder infections, gout, kidney stones, gall stones, and arthritis.
19. Nettle (Urtica Dioica) part used: the leaves
Nettle is a specific for diphtheria, it is good for internal and external bleeding, bronchitis, diarrhea, allergic reactions, and dysentery.
20. White Oak (Quercus Alba) part used: the bark
White Oak is good for mouth sores, pyorrhea (as a poultice), internal and external bleeding, menstrual problems, and strep throat.
21. Eyebright (Euphrasia Officinalis) parts used: the whole herb
Eyebright is used for conjunctivitis, and eye inflammation. Use it as a eye wash and take it internally.
22. Marshmallow (Althaea Officinalis) parts used: the root
Marshmallow is good for asthma, bronchial infections, emphysema, lung congestion, infected wounds, and gangrene.
23. Peppermint (Mentha Piperita) part used: the leaves
Peppermint is good for colds, colic, fever, flu, headaches, gas, heartburn, and shock.
24. Red Raspberry (Rubus Idaeus) part used: the leaves
Red Raspberry is good for morning sickness, nausea, vomiting, mouth sores, at childbirth it will help prevent hemorrhage, its good for fevers, and flu.
25. Scullcap (Scutellaria Lateriflora) part used: the whole herb
Scullcap is good for convulsions, epilepsy, insomnia, nerves, and restlessness.
26. Slippery Elm (Ulmus Fulva) part used: the bark
Slippery Elm is good for colitis, lung problems, asthma, as a paste (applied externally) it is good for burns, bed sores, and cuts, slippery elm gruel is a food for the patient that can't keep anything down, it's very nutritious and it taste good.
27 Thyme (Thymus Vulgaris) part used: the whole herb
Thyme is good for colic, gas, lung congestion, and whooping cough.
28 Yellow Dock (Rumex Crispus) part used: the root
Yellow Dock is a blood builder and a blood purifier, and is the best herb to treat anemia.
29. Boneset (Eupatorium Perfoliatum) part used: the whole herb
Boneset is good for All kinds of fever (including rocky mountain spotted fever), flu, typhoid fever, yellow fever, colds, chills, and scarlet fever.
30. Bayberry (Myrica Cerifera) part used: the bark.
Bayberry is used for cholera, dysentery, excessive menstrual bleeding, uterine hemorrhage, colitis, and scurvy.
31. Black Walnut (Juglans Nigra) parts used: hulls and leaves
Black Walnut oxygenates the blood, kills parasites, worms, ringworm, it is good for skin rashes, tumors, cancer, boils, and diphtheria.
32. Butcher's Broom (Ruscus Aculeatus) part used: the root
Butcher's Broom is good for Arteriosclerosis, hemorrhoids, thrombosis, vericose veins, and phlebitis.
33. Burdock (Arctium Lappa) parts used: the whole herb
Burdock is good for arthritis, eczema, gout, kidney problems, skin dis-eases, lung problems, and it is a blood purifier.
34. Licorice (Glycyrrhiza Glabra) part used: the root.
Licorice is good for adrenal exhaustion, emphysema, endurance, bronchial congestion, and hypoglycemia.
35. Schizandra (Schizandra Chinensis) part used; the berries.
Schizandra is used for nervous disorder, mental alertness, insomnia, fatigue, and it helps improve vision.

Fennel is used for: colic, gas, intestinal problems, sedative for children
