this is what I was told that is supporting the positive aspect of fluor on teeth:
- end of 18xx the US immigration authority had seen that a large number of italian immigrants didn't show any decay. they had shown many stains on the teeth - but no decay, and a strong enamel structure.
chasing the origin of those italians - they were coming from a zone in italy where the water was very rich in fluor.
this is how fluor was brought into attention and consideration.

the dentists are saying that is very important to give water with flour to kids below 12years - as they will develop teeth with strong enamel structure and good protection against decay.

later in life - drinking water with fluor might not be so beneficial, but rinsing it is.
brushing with toothpaste with fluor will protect and strenghten the enamel for a few hours - and this mainly against sweets (sugar, fruits, etc) that help forming bacteria and decay; in the same time rinsing with ORAL B (enhanced with fluor) will help for stronger enamel - but only for a few hours.
listerine - is good for protecting the gums: rinsing with listerine provides gums protection for 2-4 hrs based on the individual oral igiene situation (more acid or more alcaline); other products "mouthwash type" provide very little and short protection: max 15-30min
isn't recommended to swallow fluor or listerine, but rinsing and brushing teeth and gums is recommended and it helps.
any comments and opinions on these?
