Different metals have Different levels of Energy as they fit into the Electro-magnetic Spectrum, thus it may have been his judgment that those which had the greatest amount of attraction to Release or conduntance, should be Removed First ?

And he may have had a different understanding of this in his mind ?

For the nickel may carry a Greater ability for Magnetism than the mercury !
