Hello,
Please do keep in contact with me. You can email me through this website. Maybe in further conversation through email, we can figure out the culprit instigating your more severe eczema flareup.
Supplementing your diet with flax oil, vitamin C, and Vitamin E are actually good choices when dealing with eczema. However, and particularly referring to vitamin C and vitamin E, you want to make sure that your supplements come from whole food sources, rather than being synthetically produced. It is for this reason, along with a host of others (including the reason you mentioned: forgetting to take them), that I recommend people becoming more familiar with the food sources that provide these essential nutrients so that they can focus on getting these nutrients into their system through their diet. There are so many factors that go into supplementation; such as knowing the chemical relationship between the vitamin and minerals, and also knowing which vitamins carry the risk of overdosage. In addition to that, people can tend to develope a false sense of security in supplementation. What I mean by this is that they will focus on supplementation through pills, herbs, and oils; while at the same time, eating poorly. As a result of the poor diet, the process of supplementation is being contradicted. Taking vitamins is not an excuse to eat poorly. The most important health benefit still remains to be a healthy diet. I'm still learning on this point.
Out of the supplements you've mentioned, the one that you will most probably need to continue supplementing is the vitamin C. The reason being; vitamin C is not stored in the body as other vitamins are (it's flushed out daily), and as a result, needs to be replenished daily. Because of the daily flushing of this essential nutrient, even a basically healthy Diet may not provide sufficient vitamin C (relative to the individual).
Here is a list of Vitamin C whole food sources:
broccoli
brussels sprouts
black currants
cabbage
cauliflower
cantaloupe
grapefruit
guava
kiwi
kale
orange (& other citrus not mentioned)
pimentos
pear (green)
papaya
peppers (red, green bell)
strawberries
sweet potatoes
tomatoes
The reason that you would be taking the flax oil would be for the supplementation of your essential fatty acids. They are important, just as vitamin E is, in retaining cell moisture. Your essential fatty acids and vitamin E sources share many of the same whole food sources.
Here is a list of essential fatty acid sources:
almonds
avocados
flax
peanuts
sunflower seeds
soybean
safflower
vegetable oil
wheat germ
walnuts
Here is a list of vitamin E sources:
NUTS & SEEDS
-almonds
-brazil nuts
-cashews
-hazelnuts
-peanuts
-pecans
-sunflower
-walnuts
WHOLE GRAINS
-rice bran (brown)
-wheat germ
-wheat bran
BEANS & LEGUMES
-lima beans
-soybeans
OILS
-corn
-peanut
-sesame
-safflower
-sunflower
-wheat germ
From the list of food sources that I've given you, there are probably others that I've overlooked. Nonetheless, becoming familiar with the nutrients that food provides us goes a long way in making us more health conscious and aware of the benefits (or lack of benefits in some cases) of the foods we consume.
