A few days back there was a discussion about cutting out meat, while i know
it is a very popular and politically correct thing to do i must be the
odd one out and completely disagree with Cutting animal protein out of the diet.
ESPECIALLY red meat. REd meat is one of your MOST nutritious animal protein sources.
We all talk about all the myths that doctors feed to us well ...this is yet another.
The cholesterol theory is a myth, and saturated fat from healthy animals isnt bad
for us either. In fact it is necessary.
I urge you all to inform yourself of the work of a man called Weston A Price.
He was a dentist, whom noticing the degeneration of dental health in his patients
travelled the world in the 30s and 40s. He studied over a dozen isolated tribes from
different continents..what he discovered amazed him. Not only did these people not
suffer from dental cavities or gum disease, but they were healthy! Attractive-free
from all disease that was and ( IS ) plaguing modernized man. What was most interesting is that their health was not determinned by genes but by their diet.
the moment they left their native diet and began consuming "westernized type diets"
they began to lose their teeth they would become ill, and catch viruses and bacterial infections easily.
Once they went back to traditional foods they would get well. Something Price noted is that generation aafter generation bore healthy children with perfect facial structures, in perfect health. However if the parents left their traditional ways their children would suffer, with each generation it would get worse, and the offspring would get sicker with each consecutive abandonment of traditional diet.
Henry Pottenger ( one of Price's associates ) did an experiment on a family of cats.
The cats on their natural diet did well generation after generation. He then
changed their diet putting them on commercial catfood and cooked meat. No longer
were these cats healthy, they started bearing inferior offspring, the cats suffered
parasites, prolonged birthing, premature birth, and miscarraige, the cats that
survived suffered this plus degeration fot the skeleton ( narrow/and or fragile bones/arthritis/narrow jaw lines/rampant tooth decay etc, small bone structure)
they also suffered horrible infertility, sexual appetities became twisted and
unnatural, the females where violent and the males where docile and feminine.
After the thrird pregnancies most of the females died in births that would last days, the kittens that survived usually died within days...thus ending the strain.
THey became extinct..
Now i will tell you what these healthy disease free tribes ate..something they
ALL had in common -Animal Protien- and LOTS of FAT. Even the asian tribes he studied
consumed more fat than modern americans do today. The total amount of fat varied between 35-80% of they total caloric intake, some tribes ate more some ate less and all prefered fat from animal sources and not vegetable ( with an exception for coconut and palm which are both heavily saturated by polynesians and thai ).
He found no "true " vegetarians amoung the native tribes. Even the ones puported
to be vegetarian ate lots of bugs that where loaded with protien and saturated fats.
Many tribes consumed 2 to 3 times the amount of saturated fat we consume and yet
suffered no ill effects to their health. IN fact the contrary they were healthier
than we are, they had no cancer, heart disease, arthritis, autoimmune diseases,
miscarraige, infertility, prolonged child birth, dental cavities etc etc you get
the picture.
THese tribes included ( but not limited to the hunzas, the gaelic hebrides ( off of ireland ), the masai, eskimos and other native americans. These people knew and
sought out the fattiest meats, they fed pregnant and women of childbearing age
VERY fatty foods. THey comsumed many times the fat soluble vitamins and minerals that we do. ANd they enjoyed physical and mental well being because of this.
Now before you write off all that ive said think of this: America has one of the
worst Healthy Life expectancies in the world, France that cooks their food
in Duck fat of all things has far less heart disease than we do they call
this "The french Paradox". The Greeks who are second in the world for Life Expectancy second to only the Hunzas of Japan consume a VERY fatty diet,Lamb sausages, full fat cream and cheeses, and veal are a staple of their native diet
and yet they are second in the world for their long life! If you think im
making this up read for yourself " Nutrition and Physical Degeration" DDS Weston A
Price. also " Nourishing Traditions" By Sally Fallon and Mary Enig PHD is based
on his research and reads like an encyclopedic cook book. "Pottengers Cats" By
Henry Pottenger and many more. ALso feel free to check out http://www.westonaprice.org.
Just look around you. Our fat consumption has decreased manifold since the turn
of the century , we are eating less animal protien and less animal based fat than one hundred years ago and yet 1 in ever 3 of us is dying of some form of heart disease...
its obviously not helping.
take care all
Briseis
PS. there IS one kind of fat that we ARE consuming MORE of...can you guess what
it is? Ill give you a hint Poly...
and we are consuming about 300% more of it than at the turn of the century, when
heart disease was rare.
