BOIL YOUR WATER

There is something I just came across from an ENT doctor who says that if you are going to clean your sinuses with warm salt water then the water should be boiled for 5 minutes.

Here's the actual solution and directions.  His does not contain baking soda.

Preparation Solution:

1. One quart clean water and two level teaspoonfuls of ordinary table salt boiled together for 20 minutes in a closed container.

2.  Let cool to room temperature then pack into a large canning jar that has been sterilized before hand.  Cover with a new canning lid.  Keep this at room temperature and it should last you several days.  You may use this mixture to clean your sinuses and/or gargle with.

3.  Pour your liquid from this jar into a clean cup whenever you need to use it.  If you want to warm it up then you can put the whole jar into a pan of warm water.

4.  Never put your fingers or any foreign object into the water jar.  Do not use any water for irrigation of your sinues except that which has been boiled.

To Use:

1.  Use a rubber bulb syringe that you would buy at drug store (the same kind used to clean out children's noses).

2.  Fill the bulb syringe with room temp nasal solution.

3.  Lean over the sink with mouth open and head down.

4.  Squirt the salt water solution into one side of your nose, aiming to the side and up (pointing towards the corner of your eye near your nose).

5.  Irrigate with 2 to 4 syringes full of solution or until clear.

6.  repead for other side.

****

That's a lot of irrigating!  I just snuff a little of the water up into my nostrils directly from a little cup and then blow my nose.

ALSO - One should not irrigate the sinuses on a daily basis as this therapy could turn from beneficial to harming your delicate sinus mucosa.  Only do this when you are really having sinus problems.
