Hullo all,
Would be very grateful if anyone can throw light on this mystery, which is becoming rather disturbing. Have been feeling great overall on around 90% Paleo (MUCH better than before, with people saying how young & healthy I look) for 3 years, and have no temptation to go back to lots of grains - carb cravings and gnawing hunger all gone once I gave up sugar, coffee and grains. Suspect I had insulin resistance before, even though skinny & generally fit & healthy, with no diabetes in family.
GENERAL DIET is ALL organic, 2 meals/day: breakfast & dinner (or lunch) only, with nothing but green tea between.
BREAKFAST: Whole grapefruit, blueberries with dried coconut flakes, then protein (sardines 4x/wk, or omelette with turmeric 2x/wk, or chicken liver & sausage once/week) with 1/2 avocado plus steamed tomato & LOTS of spinach topped with a little butter/flaxseed oil.
PRE-DINNER SNACK: celery, pepitas, walnuts & Brazil nuts
DINNER: 3x/wk HUGE salad (watercress, shredded purple cabbage & carrot, purple onion, red capsicum, avocado, garlic, nori, olive/flax oil) with wild salmon or organic steak.
Other days, 4x/wk: Asian style meal - one dish of organic meat with LOTS of red & green veg & lots of ginger & garlic, other dish of LOTS of broccoli/cabbage with shiitake mushrooms & sesame oil.
DESSERT sometimes: mixed berries, other fresh/stewed fruit with yoghurt
THE PROBLEM: Broke ankle, rested 6 weeks as directed, then sometime after resuming jogging (5kms 3x/wk) started to have tingling in toes & noticed some partial numbness in some toes & sole of foot. Investigated by docs who said nerve must have been stretched either at knee or ankle, when I broke my bone - would just have to rest and see if it improved. It imporved quite a lot (still some slight numbness, and twitching of calf muscle noticed at night).
Some time passed, then while using the Lat Pull-down machine at the gym, had a sudden and very shar twinge in my neck/upper back on the right side of the spine. Pain subsided somewhat after a few minutes, so continued weight-training as normal. After many weeks, noticed a deep muscle pain in upper right arm, thouhgt I must have strained a muscle slightly, and it went away after a couple of weeks. After, many more weeks, started to have tingling in right hand, finally connected it to the gym injury and realised there must be pinching of a nerve root, probably had a bulging disk in my neck - had MRI etc, they said all looked OK with disks, but I had my doubts because a friend was also told that when having an MRI overseas, only to find she actually DID have a disk problem when having another MRI in the US.
I stopped all weight training for awhile, checked with experts if I needed to improve/change my technique, and started again with lower weights, very careful technique etc. The hand still has slight sensation loss, but being perimenopausal I didnt want to stop weight training for too long. Havent had a bone density test yet, as I CANNOT see that my diet could possibly be lacking in calcium, but am a bit worried about why I suddenly broke my ankle (the ligaments actually pulled chips of bone away from my ankle - does that mean my ligaments are too strong or my bones too weak??) and apparently did something to my spine which is usually connceted to bone deterioration.
Hvae been in this uneasy balance between doing the weights then stopping for awhile when I think the neuropathy in my arm has got worse again.
Now, the new thing is some burning neuropathy in my upper right thigh, which seems to get worse after jogging. I can believe I may have stretched a nerve at the knee when I turned over so badly on my ankle & nbroke it, but this is ABOVE the knee!
I have to suspect a Vitamin B deficiency, even though I cant believe my diet is deficient in it - tried supplements but they didnt help and only gave me headaches. In desperation, also tried eating lots of whole grains (brown rice or Essene bread) after dinner for a week, but no real change - just got bags under my eyes, bloodshot eyes and felt tired from eating the grains.
Am now REALLY stumped - may have to go back to doctors and get tested for diabetes (although I know I dount possibly have it, but what else could be my problem - is it the Paleo diet??), even tho the diet recommended for diabetics (e.g. on the website http://www.realfoodnutrients.com/NEU/Causes.htm) is exactly what I am eating! I may have to try the special forms of Vit.B1 and B12 they sell on that website, which apparently has helped diabetic neuropathy - what else can I do??
Any ideas or similar experiences greatly appreciated! Thanks!
