Blessings to you! Fortunately, this guy was only a friend and never more than that. It's very difficult to be involved romantically with a substance abuser...and the other things that I've recently heard that this guy is allegedly or possibly involved in. When you black out, who knows what a body will do, eh?

As you alluded in your post, we sometimes get bogged down in the dysfunction of others because of some need in ourselves....to fix, control, be needed, etc. That is actually more heinous and sick than the dependent person's problems. What kind of person needs to fix or control someone who is that MESSED UP?

So, when I realized that a grown professional man (multiple degrees, high position) lives in a frat house condition with other stuff going on....time to take care of ME and not worry about the health and welfare of someone else who doesn't care enough to help himself....at least, PRESENTLY.

When he hits bottom, he may want to change. Maybe not! Maybe he will end up dead, in prison, in a wheelchair, or something else. I've tried to help him refrain from suicide twice, and many other catastrophes. Now, I get it. The facade was deceiving and he has deep problems.

So sad, but what's a body to do!

So glad that he's never been a romantic interest of mine, just a brotherly/sisterly friend. YIKES! WHAT A MESS!
