I do not think Science missed the boat so much as the information is suppressed.
Obviously, by virtue of the internet, we are fortunate to have access to more than
just one side of the story.

Whistle-blowers and scientists are intimiated and often sworn to secrecy. A big corportation pays for testing and *buys* that silence. In a perfect world that
sheet would not fly...

In our current culture, it does, to the detriment of future generations...
