If other dogs and puppies are exposed to Parvo/Distemper OR an outbreak in your area. Give half a gram of sodium ascorbate daily for small dogs and puppies, going up the scale of amount for med to large dogs.

For a dog weighting about 4 kilos, often three or four one gram slow-release tables straight down the throat, OR two teaspoons of sodium ascorbate powder, OR eight cc of vitamin C by injection in the muscle will be all that is needed to stop the symptoms immediately.
* If caught early pet will rarely need to be given a second dose.
This works equally as well for hard pad and parvo virus.

Signs are, as with other kinds of distemper, lack of appetite, diarrhea and vomiting accompanied by very quick dehydration. - If a dog has parvo med size dog would get approx. 10 grams of Sodium ascorbate acid, if dog is already at the vets, ask for them to administer this Vit C by injection intravenously or muscle and repeat if necessary daily. Linda Lipe - IMPS Regional Coordinator - of Miniature Pinscher Rescue, AR, MS said, ... We first started using it on humane society dogs who were too old or infirm to survive conventional treatment. They started going titer neg. in 3 months. Then I had the worst case of HW I have ever seen in a miniture pinscher cross that I pulled from a shelter. My vet said they had never seen so many microfilariae in blood. We didn't bother to titer him. He was coughing, turning blue on exertion, bleeding from the eyes under stress (severe infestation causes bleeding disorders), mouth breathing due to very little oxygen, and obviously was energyless. By this time I was using only Black-Walnut capsules. He went titer neg. in two months. I didn't believe it and I made them test him twice.

General rule is, small dogs get 1/4 human dose, large dogs get a full human dose. For a big dog, I would use two capsules a.m and two capsules p.m. Actually, it would probably be enough if you used only two a day. On minpins I use 1 a.m. and 1 p.m. Dogs who are fostered out sometimes get only one a day, and it works well. I have seen many dogs treated this way, and only one had any problem. He threw an embolism, seem to have some breathing difficulty, and spent a Saturday morning at the vet in a cage with oxygen. After that he was OK and hasn't looked back. The treatment is usually gentle enough that they do not throw emboli, which is what makes is so much less dangerous than the conventional kill them all at once treatment.

Needless to say, it is not as agonizingly painful as the IM shots. I've seen dogs who refused to move for days after Heart Worm shots.
