Hello again,
Your son had not had an eczema reaction since his infancy and up to the age of 18. Something triggered his eczema reaction in December of 2004. Due to the location of the reaction on the face, it is a good possibility that a contact allergic dermatitis is the form of this eczema reaction. This could be a result of a different soap used to clean the face. What would instigate that reaction further would be chemicals (like chlorine or fluoride) in the water. Usually people make the assumption that chemicals in the water are irrelevant because an individual had not shown a reaction to the chemically treated water with prior usage; however, a weakened immune system along with the wearing away of the skin's moisture barrier, would make an individual more vulnerable to the chemicals in the water. When your son's face manifested the eczema reaction, washing his face with chemically treated water (containing chlorine or fluoride) would definitely be too harsh for the skin (especially the face). Therefore, even though the chemically treated water may not have caused the initial eczema reaction, it (like the harsh medications) would further instigate the eczema suffering and compromise the body's ability to heal.
Another issue that would need to be addressed as a major culprit for your son's eczema discomfort, (in particular on the region of the face), would be amalgam/metal dental fillings. If your son has Amalgam fillings in his teeth, mercury/metals from the fillings would make its way through the body and cause eczema irritation. The effects of this would not be felt immediately; however, overtime the damage to the body is done and an eczema reaction on the skin would begin to manifest. The best way to test for mercury levels in the body is through the urine, hair, or stool. Blood test for mercury aren't very accurate because the mercury doesn't like the blood. If you decide to have your son tested for mercury, you can discern whether or not the practitioner is knowledgable of what they are doing by the type of test they administer. The question that needs to be answered is, "Does your son have fillings in his teeth?" If he does, you should consider Amalgam removal and opt for a natural alternative. To get this done, you will need to find a dentist that incorporates natural dentistry in their practice.
Yet another culprit for your son's continued eczema suffering is stress. Stress releases cortisol, which increases histamine release. With the increase of histamine, the immune system is thrown further out of balance (overactive) and an eczema reaction results. At 18, your son is dealing with the stress of college, career, and becoming an adult. He now has the responsibility of making decisions that will affect his life and future. At this stage in his life, the stress factor is extremely high; as a result, an already vulnerable eczema condition is made worse. One big way to help relieve the stress of this very vulnerable time in his life is to consider a year or semester delay in between high school graduation and starting college. In this time, your son could concentrate on healing himself first (without the added stress of college/classes/socializing). He has already stated that he doesn't want to show his face or come out of his room. If he knows that he has your support in a one year break before entering college, where he can focus on his healing, then the stress of college (and all that it entails) could be alleviated. In this time, you can also help him in determining his passion; so that when he does go to further his education, he already has direction as to what it is he wants to study.
Another stress reliever is chamomile. This is the natural way to subdue your son's stress levels within the body. A drink of chamomile tea (without sugar) should help to alleviate the stress and the itch because it is a natural anti-histamine. If he's not allergic to chamomile, then I suggest this as a good option. Another natural anti-histamine is vitamin C. Increasing his vitamin C intake will also help.
As far as the care of the skin goes, I suggest the Orange Essence Facial Cleanser and the Parsley Blemish Stick by Burt's Bees to treat your son's inflamed and broken skin. The Orange Essence Facial cleeanser contains orange oil (a source of vitamin C), oat kernal protein (natural anti-itch qualities), aloe (natural anti-itch properties as well), vitamin E (promotes cellular regeneration/rehydration), and beta carotene (an immune booster). The parsley blemish stick contains calendula (an anti-inflammatory/anti-itch), tea tree oil (natural antiseptic/astringent), and borage oil (which contains the essential fatty acids that promote skin rehydration). Here is the website address to view these products: http://www.burtsbees.com Once you select the 'shop online', then click on the 'facial care' section to view the products mentioned. You can also purchase these products at your local Whole Foods Market (a national chain of stores).
Remembering back to Decemeber of 2004, do you recall anything, in particular, that could have promoted your son's initial eczema flareup. It is important to figure this out; so that you can be assured that the thing that promoted the initial flareup is not still present in your son's environment. In addition to that, and because eczema is a toxic release, it will be important for your son to incorporate some type of a cleanse/detox. Removing Amalgam fillings is one means of toxic removal; however, cleansing his liver, bowel, colon, and kidneys of the toxins that have accumulated over the years is also very important. The All Natural Cleanse by Natures Medicine is the system that I recommend; (especially for first time use). Here is the website to view this product further: http://www.allnaturalcleanse.com
