Hello,
I am extremely frustrated and confused and need help. I'm not good at asking for help but I'm at a breaking point. I need to get this all out - so sorry in advance for the lengthiness and the despertateness (a word?) of this.
I understand what people here are saying about treating the symptoms and not getting to the root cause of the eczema. But we've been dealing with this for almost 2 years and have not been able to figure it out. If I knew exactly which foods and environmental allergens to eliminate and which foods to add, I would do it in a second. It seems impossible to me and I get caught in the cycle of giving medecine that I hate to use because I don't want my son to suffer.
My dermatologist and allergist think eczema "just happens" and don't attribute it to food. (they say 15% or less is attributed to food) I went to these professionals in the beginning, at my wits end, because I thought that everything I put in my sons mouth was essentially poisening him. Against my better judgement, they convinced me food isn't always the culprit and I just need to deal with the keeping it under control.
My son has had eczema since he was 6 months old and he is now 26 months. He tested allergic to eggs, peanuts, green beans and cats. (I've been told eggs are okay when they are "in" something but he can't have concentrated amounts like in a quiche, french toast, straight egg, etc.) He is on Zyrtec every day and uses protopic and Locoid as needed. His flareups seem to be much worse in the summer as the heat really seems to affect him. I use aquaphor every day as well, 100% cotton, etc, etc....
I've had situations recently where he's had an acute flareup and even with Benedryl, creams, oatmeal baths, etc, he is so itchy that it's unbearable for him and unbearable to watch. Parents who don't deal with this could never understand how hard this is.
Is there a sample diet that I can start with? How do I know if something environmentally isn't causing the flare-ups instead of a particular food? I start to worry about everything... was it the flowers he touched, was it that we had a visitor who had cats, was it that acidic fruit his aunt gave him, was it the chlorine from the pool, was it because he ate a snack with a bunch of preservatives , was it the dye in his clothing, dust mites? etc, etc, etc. I can drive myself crazy with this. Everyone else thinks I'm crazy about this stuff too, but they aren't the ones up giving oatmeal baths in the middle of the night... (yes, I know I'm venting!)
When allergy tests are often false negative, and we know in our gut that they are allergic, it causes me to question EVERYTHING. (i.e. my son tested negative to dog, but there's no question that he's allergic) I don't know what to do or where to start. Unless I put him in a bubble, how am I going to figure this out? Should I look for a different type of doctor?
Please, please, please help me. Thanks if you're still reading this far. I appreciate it.
Corinna
