It's been a rough day for our Haley, but I have some good news.
Haley stayed at the vet's office until 5:30 PM. She had been given CBC's every two hours, and her hematocrit was dropping. By 5:30 it was at 32%. This was at the low end of normal, but there was some definite concern that it hadn't stabilized. We all reviewed options, and decided the best course of action was to have Haley stay overnight at a full-facility animal hospital where she could be under 24-hour observation. If her hematocrit dropped to life-threatening levels, there was a donor on site who would be available for a blood transfusion.
The vet at this facility examined Haley and concurred with the rat poison diagnosis. The good news at the time was that Haley's attitude was still good and there were no hematomas or pitiki manifesting anywhere, and her stool and urine were clear.
Haley got another CBC done at 8 PM. I called the vet to check the numbers, and learned that Haley had stabilized at 32%. She was to be given an Antibiotic (tetracycline or some other) to prevent any bacterial infection from the old blood clots and probably an anti-parasitic (since Texas has them all).
They will check her again at midnight and at 4 AM if they think they need to.
Haley is an 8 month old German Shepherd/ yellow Lab mix that our son rescued from our local animal shelter. She is a beautiful dog, highly intelligent, as sweet as she can be, and thinks she's a kid. I'd appreciate you prayers for her while she is on the mend.
Blessings,
-Donna
