In places like Cuba and Thailand there are people living self-sufficiently from their apartments in high rises - using terrariums and growing things like squash out of their windows.

Also having rooftop gardens/sod roofs and growing plants around the outrside of the house decrease energy consumption of the A/C and heating. This technique is being used to good degree for builldings and business parks in Germany.
