Well treating it naturally is a bit of a misnomer, but there are natural things we can do to minimise problems. Vegetable oils to replace grain for calories is benefital, particularly Rice Bran Oil and Flax. Monitoring calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium levels and such can help too. A neighbor of mine has a horse suffering the syndrome, and since I turned her on to Rice Bran Oil she is a true believer. Horses love it too. It helps with stabilization of the glycemic index, as many fats do, but the RBO in particular seems to be a step above other stuff, even things like wheat germ oil. I personally think the naturally high levels of Gamma Oryzanol have a benefitial effect, as does my neighbor Jan too. She was using DAC for awhile, and definitely prefers RBO. I use it for my performance horses, for different reasons, though the Gamma O is still the primary benefit. Since it's a plant sterol, it safely helps develop lean muscle mass. RBo is also hypoallergenic and an anti ulcer compound too, pretty nice as side effects go!
