Not running around outside is probably a good part of our problems these days... Like North Coast, our neighborhood was full of kids playing all kinds of games and imaginative sports.

We also would run out at night until it was almost too dark to see any more, unless mom and/or dad had other plans. We knew EVERYONE within 2 blocks in every direction and had neighborhood BBQs and such about once a month AND this was not the Boy Scouts, Church, Sports teams etc. etc. where you would see them on almost a daily basis.

Now who knows their neighbors like that today?

I started taking the time to talk to my neighbors on either side of me and across the street at every opportunity (I corner them)... I think it helps to reduce the "fear" that so many people seem to have any more.
