I was looking for something more low-key than PTSD but that is close. I think my examples were a bit extreme.

This might be a better example - a person develops regrets in life and those regrets hold him back and keep him from living life and having a future. Sort of letting the past sabotage the future. Extending the future damages done by focusing on the past problem. Paralyzing the future because the person keeps thinking of the past and can't get over it.

Another example could be - a woman keeps thinking of a past relationship and breakup which keeps her from starting a new relationship.
