I am looking for a term or word that describes the concept, where a person experiences a negative situation or problem in the past, but then it causes even more problems because that person dwells on it or can't get past it, and the long term dwelling ends up causing much more damage than the original event itself. Like when someone can't move forward in life because the past is dragging them down in their mind and preventing them from moving forward and achieving their potential because they can't get over what happened in the past.
An example could be... a person gets robbed of $50 and then is fearful for the rest of his life because of the robbery. Or a person is teased in grade school and that effects that person for life because of low self esteem. Or a child is molested and as a result never has healthy relationships with males for the rest of her life.
Anything appreciated... I guess the key point would be that the long term residual effects of the event are more damaging than the original event itself.
