Every time I try to sign in I get an error saying: Messenger is having problems and will have to close down. We apologize for the incovenience.

Then you can choose send the error or leave it. Only the 4.7 Messenger works on my pc. All the other versions (7.0, 7.5, 8.0) get the same error.
