Hello,
If an intervertebral disc is already broken and pressing so badly onto nerves that the patient can hardly stand the pain or is partly paralized then a surgery might be necessary. If the patient can still walk on his own alternative methods should be considered.
In a survey here in Germany only 20% of all surgery on Back Pain patients are considred sucessfull so more doctors try to use other means before the knife.
The good news: Most Back Conditions resolve after about 6 to 8 weeks with or without any therapy with the right mix of rest and movement.
Our body in most cases heals itsself.
To assist this healing you have to watch three points:
1. Avoid the wrong stuff (bad lifestyle, bad posture and movement habits etc.)
2. Do a safe and effective Therapy (One that you can cooperate and understand, and get a second opinion)
3. Do your homework (Self Help Exercises, Muscular Training, Stress Management etc.)

You have to decide, do not just follow advices from others and then blame them if they did not work for you!
If you decide on surgery then choose a good doctor that gives you names of succesfully treated patients you may want to talk to before any surgery.

Continue your research about this if you have the time.
Blessings
