Guilt after abortion, is it normal?
YES!
Guilt is very normal for a woman to experience after an abortion. A woman is hardly if ever forewarned that she will feel this guilt after having an abortion.
Even when women are counseled not to feel guilty, it still seems to linger. It is strange that even though we know and are told not to feel guilty, we for some reason can't shake that guilt. It is the most prominent of post abortion side effects, and can linger the longest.
Something that helps, is knowing why we as women tend to feel this guilt and un-easiness. Learning to embrace this emotion and understand the reason why we feel the way we do plays a major role in healing after having an abortion.
One of the main reasons for feeling guilt is because deep inside the make up of a woman is the mothering instinct. With that mothering instinct comes the moral code of motherhood that is born with us and shaped and molded as we grow into women. So having an abortion goes directly against that instinct. Likely most times you don't feel it consciously, but it is there on a sub-conscious level and that is when the guilt is born and can be exhibited by different actions or behaviors. Some women struggle with this guilt for years after having an abortion and part of the guilt cycle is staying silent and feeling sub-standard or second class and therefore not worthy to share their stories or talk their feelings over with anyone. This can turn into a very destructive cycle.
I want you to know that we can break this cycle, by simply opening the doors of communication and realizing and reassuring ourselves that it is okay to talk about our experiences. I'm not saying you have to shout it from the roof tops, but definitely talk to someone you trust. Even talking here within this forum is a good start, it is a release of the emotion that has been allowed to build up.
Remember women are born to talk and be communicators - so start on the road to healing by talking, and shedding some of the guilt you feel.
It is okay to grieve, don't feel guilty for it!
Warm Regards,
Ev
