I am so sorry about your friend. I lost a friend in 1983 to ALS. He was only 28 when he died. The terrible thing about ALS is it robs you of your body, but your mind is still very active. I think anything you could convince him to do (cleansing, cayenne, etc.) certainly would not hurt, so give it a try!!
