He was a muslim. He came from Sri Lanka, which is an island off of the coast of India. As far as I know Ayurveda is a tradition of diet and medicine, nothing to do with religion. He treated people with herbs and exorcisms in Sri Lanka, but didn't do that in this country, because he didn't want to run afowl of the authorities.
