I just had the Mirena inserted 3 days ago and I agree about the measuring part. That was also the longest part of the procedure, so possibly the reason it hurt the most. For me, it was really not worse than bad menstrual cramps and definitely not the worst pain of my life. Once the instruments were out it went away and I have just had slight cramping on and off since, along with very light spotting. You are supposed to have it inserted during your period, since your cervix will be open to an extent at that time of the month, so maybe that's why it didn't hurt as much? Now my concern is that it will fall out...I wonder if anyone out there has had that happen?
