The infection may be caused by a number of different species of fungi. Have you suffered from this before? The treatment is to introduce an anti-fungal substance into the nail. The problem is that very little penetrates into nails. It has to be incorparated into the nail while it is being grown.

If the infection is confined to the end of the nails, I would perhaps suggest applying tea tree oil a few times a day and allow it to grow out. However, if it has spread further than that, then I'm afraid your only recourse is to go to the doctor. Terbinafine (Lamisil) tablets 250mg, one daily is likely to be the reccomendation - possibly for as long as three months. Nail infections are a pain in the a*se.
