Dear ones,

Finally I think I'm getting somewhere.

I am currently working my way through an absolutely fascinating book on natural healing, called Total Wellness, by Joseph Pizzorno, ND.(Prima Publishing, Rocklin, CA, 1996, 1998) Dr. Pizzorno has been counsel to two US presidents concerning alternative and complimentary healthcare, and founded Bastyr University, the first four year university to train naturopathic doctors. Dr. Pizzorno has had over twenty years of clinical expereience, and has credentials as long as his arm.

In a chapter called "Live In Harmony With the Psychosocial/Spiritual/Lifeforce," Dr. Pizzorno describes how the mind and body make a connection. He descibes in detail how the mind can heal the body. On pages 321-322, Pizzorno writes:

Research has discovered that the brain and body communicate using a flood of chemical messengers that hook up to receptors on the surface membranes of our cells, and that our very thoughts, moods, and attitudes have a significant impact on which chemical messengers are sent and how they are received. Candace Pert, PhD., former chief of Brain Biochemistry at NIH, whose landmark discovery of opiate receptors in the brain led to an understanding of how neuropeptide messengers link brain and body, calls them "the biochemical correlates of emotion," because their composition and activity are directly dependent on our states of mind. These neurotransmitters translate our every fleeting thought, reaction, and emotion- conscious or unconscious- into physiological changes. They're found not just in the brain but in the immune system, endocrine system, heart, lungs, intestines- in short, everywhere. The more we know about these messenger molecules, the more evident it becomes that we are not a mind in a machine but a single integrated entity; these peptides constitute a "psychosomatic communication network" which the mind is literally spread throughout the body. [Pert, C., "The Chemical Communicators," in Moyers, B.: Healing and the Mind, Doubleday, NY, 1993, pp.177-93.]

Pizzorno goes on:

By causing the release of neuropeptides, which communicate directly with every cell in our bodies, our moods and attitudes become incarnate. Body and mind are two manifestations of the same process. Feelings and thoughts... [generate] messenger molecules that direct every cellular action, telling each of our cells when to divide,WHICH GENES TO TURN ON AND WHEN, TO MAKE MORE OF THIS PROTEIN OR LESS OF THAT ONE. [emphasis mine-dp]In other words, karma has a chemical basis....

The tantalizing prospect is that we can learn to use our minds to promote our physical as well as mental health.

Other research sited to support this theory include studies done by Margaret Kemeny, PhD, assistant professor of Psychiatry & Biobehavioral Sciences at UCLA, David Felten, MD, PhD, professor of Neurobiology & Anatomy at the University of Rochester, with his wife, Susan Felten, PhD, and Dr. Robert Ader.

It has been proven that cognitive and emotional factors are important in triggering the onset of viral illnesses [Mason,J.W.: A historical view of the stress field:II.J Human Stess 1:35, 1975]. Dr. Mason is an endocrinologist and stress researcher at Yale Medical School.

On page 324, Dr Pizzorno quotes Hans Selye, the father of stress theory, in his book, Stress of Life: "What happens if you pass a helpless drunk who verbally insults you? If you ignore the abuse, you're not likely to experience any physiological ill effects, but if you let it anger you, 'you will discharge adrenalines that increase blood pressure and pulse rate, while your whole nervous system becomes alarmed and tense in anticipation of combat. If you happen to be a coronary candidate, the result may be a fatal heart attack.' What caused your death? The drunk? His insults? No, Selye explains, 'Death was caused by choosing the wrong reaction.'"

I will write another post about this. I believe it is a vital key as to the cause of adult onset spontaneous fascioscapularhumeral/scapularperoneal muscular dystrophy.

Blessings,
-Donna
