It seems to me that the whole DEFINITION of slavery was different back then than in recent times. In the past several hundred years, slaves were taken by force, kidnapped and enslaved. This practice was absolutely condemned, however by the Bible. Basically, there were four legal ways to get slaves back in Biblical times: They could be purchased (Leviticus 25:44-46), captured in war (Numbers 31:32-35; Deuteronomy 21:10-14), enslaved as punishment for theft (Exodus 22:1-3), or enslaved to pay off debts (Leviticus 25:39; Exodus 21:7). All of which would be some sort of jusice/debt repayment. This strikes me more of indentured servitude than slavery.

It's another case of apples and oranges.
