Cognitive dissonance is used lately to mean "holding two contradictory ideas at once". The verdict in the Scott Peterson case is a classic example... that the baby's life was somehow less worthy. Just like the Jews in Nazi Germany, after the Third Reich had legally defined them as "Untermenchen" = lesser beings.
There is debate to this day about the actual tally of people liquidated in the third Reich. But there are accurate figures to prove that just during the reign of George Bush II, five million American babies were exterminated. And this is the one they call a 'Christian'! If that's what Christianity does in power, you can keep it.
Peterson was charged with two counts of first degree murder. Prompted by the judge, the jury came back with a verdict of guilty of first degree for killing his wife, but guilty of second degree for the eight-month baby inside her.
Those people = the jury = know where babies come from. They had enough life experience to know that people sing to their unborn children and feel the child move and certainly speak as though the child is alive etc ... because common sense tells us he or she is.
The baby in the womb is nothing OTHER THAN a human being. It's not a puppy. IT's not a potato. It's not a pair of pliers.
I started this thread focussing on the word "person". The law is irrefutable that the child in the womb is a Person in the eyes of the Law. The definition of "every one" in the Canadian Criminal Code includes what a Person "can own and do." Believe it or not, the child is in charge of the pregnancy. The placenta is his or her body tissue, not the mother's. He or she controls the implantation of the placenta in the uterine wall. He/ she controls when he will be born.
But first and last, the thing the unborn Person can do is, to live. Tearing that unborn innocent Person apart in order to pull him or her out of the mother, in nothing less than murder.
And please, dispense with the specious nonsense that the unborn Person is "only the size of a pinhead" That's the best/worst example of "cognitive dissonance" going. Most children are aborted at about 8 to 12 weeks. At that age, humans being in gestation are about 2 1/2 inches long. Perfectly formed right down to their fingertips. Heart beating on their own. Brain waves evident, meaning that they certainly feel pain being torn asunder.
