Menstrual fluid and blood are actually two different fluids...when you see bright red blood that is a significant quantity it may indicate that there is a medical condition present such as fibroids or polyps that are resulting in a passage of blood...not just menstrual fluid. Clots can also 'puncture' or 'leak' blood...again they are generally the result of a condition such as fibroids or endometriosis. Perimenopause is a time when there are many hormonal changes and any of the above conditions can be exacerbated during this time. One thing is certain...a bowl full of bright red blood is not normal...and you really should get it checked out!
