In the book "Fasting and Eating For Health" Joel Fuhrman says the metabolism will drop about 20% when consuming 500 calories or less. Even though Fuhrman is a fasting expert, he really does not advocate longterm fasting as a way to lose weight. He does say that once a person has lost most of their excess weight and have established good eating habits, then fasting may be a good way to drop the remaining excess pounds.

Paul Bragg advocates mixing increasingly longer fasts with periods of healthy eating to prevent extreme metabolic slowdown.

The strange thing is that for optimum health and longevity a slower metabolism is desirable. However with most of today's population being overweight, we all want to rev up our metabolic rate in order to drop pounds faster.
