Here is a brief summary of a plan fasting expert Paul Bragg described in his book "The Miracle Of Fasting". I thought this might be something a lot of us (myself included) could use for weight loss/control before, during and after the holidays. I recommend this book to anyone interested in Water Fasting no matter what the reason.
To begin to incorporate fasting into a healthy, but rapid weight loss program begin by doing one day fasts two to three times a week. On eating days follow a low calorie diet. In a program Bragg designed for a well known actress he started doing two twenty four hour fasts a week. The third week she did one three day fast. She followed the diet the fourth week, then did a seven day fast the fifth week. There was another week of eating, followed by a 15 day fast. After two weeks of eating, a twenty-one day fast followed.
This program sounds a little radical for someone like me, who tends to be conservative and cautious about extreme health measures. Yet, I can also see why this program would allow for a gradual introduction to fasting and a slower detox at first. (no matter why you are doing a fast, detoxification is going to be an issue). I wonder if the weeks of eating between the longer fasts also help keep the metabolism working better. This person was able to lose at least 50 pounds in three months. That rate is slow enough to be healthy and not too stressful on the system. A heavier person could probably lose even more weight during this time frame.
The diet Bragg talked about was quite simple, fruit for breakfast, salad and cooked veggies for lunch, a simple lettuce and tomato salad for dinner along with a bit of protein like a boiled egg or a small piece of lean meat. No breads or desserts were allowed.
While Paul Bragg does not name the actress he planned this fasting program for; I can't help but wonder if it might have been Elizabeth Taylor. I remember she gained a lot of weight when she was married to Senator Warner (sp?). She was the butt of a lot of jokes from the rather tasteless comedians of the day. She suddenly appeared back on the entertainment scene looking as beautiful as ever. This is just a guess on my part, but I wonder....
I am thinking of trying this plan later on when I can do the longer fasts after warmer weather arrives. I have put on more weight than I care to think about the last couple of months. I want to enjoy the holidays, then get serious again. I hope I can schedule my vacation so I can do the last long fast for both healing and weight loss. Healing fasts require near complete rest to be effective. That kind of rest is not an option for most of us.
For those of you interested in reading about this plan in Bragg's own words, please try and find an older addition of "The Miracle Of Fasting". It will be a worthwhile investment not only for weight loss help, but also to incorporate fasting into a healthy lifestyle.
