I am posting this in the hopes that it is within the parameters of the user agreement for this forum, as it deals with a food issue that is very important to me and I can use some help.
As a lifelong second-generation vegetarian, I was saddened recently to learn that Kellogg has discontinued making Protose. For the uninitiated, Protose is a peanut-based, canned meat substitute that has been on the market for decades. It is a delicious source of protein and is high in dietary fiber.
I have been eating Protose since I was a kid--over 40 years. My father needs it as an ingredient in his best dish. My 10-year-old daughter loves it. Protose has been a staple food for my family--three generations of vegetarians. In fact, I'm posting this because I have a craving for it right now! :-)
Unfortunately, the market for Protose was apparently too small for Kellogg, which took over the Worthington company which originally made the product. A quick Google search will show plenty of Protose-based recipies for Vegetarians and especially for Vegans.
I believe in the power of numbers and I would like to see if there is interest in forming an ad-hoc consumer group to pressure Kellogg to either revive Protose or find another company that would be willing to produce it.
Please email me at saveprotose@yahoo.com if you are interested.
