So true...you are not missing anything but its not mandatory to be a vegetarian in India though usaully people prefer when they see suffereings of animals and some respect to cow as she was favorite animal of Lord krishna, what Hinduism worship about.
Same with Buddism too....for both not necessary, now a days kids and other generation just eat like western countries!
