The ignorance here on the vegan/vegetarian topic is astonishing to me. It is true that if vegans do not select their food wisely, they can be deficient in some vitamins and minerals. However, that goes for all people, meat eaters as well. Nevertheless, to get back to the b12 topic, there are several non-meat sources of b12, sea vegetables-laver, nutritional yeast, tempeh, and b12 is also found in the soil of organic vegetables. Anyway, the body does not need very much b12. The problem comes when you have putrefied/rancid food in your body which prevents the body from absorbing b12 from food. This is why a lot of people supplement with b12, especially as they get older. Because at that point their alimentary canal is so encrusted with fecal and mucoid matter that they have to take unusually high dosages to absorb the vitamin for the rest of their life. Ask a doctor or nurse. They will tell you that the body just stops absorbing it; of course they will not tell you why.
For the record, I have a friend who is vegan. She has 3 children. She was vegan during pregnancy and DID NOT take ANY supplements. NEVERTHELESS, ALL HER CHILDREN WERE/ARE HEALTHY. She got tested regularly throughout pregnany by a doctor to make sure she got all the vitamins and minerals needed for pregnancy; and she got them all, enough for her and baby. Now her children are older and guess what--they DO NOT TAKE VITAMINS, never have, but they are healthy and like her get all the vitamins and minerals they need including B12. They are all very intelligent,active children, great sizes. Unlike a lot of meat-eating, dairy-drinking children/babies who look like baby cows because they are so big from drinking another animals milk, and these children often get ear infections,linked to dairy consumption, among other illnesses; they have definitely had their share of Antibiotics .
About the complexion of vegans/veg.
Who do you work with is my question? I know plenty of vegans/veg. children and adults who have nothing short of beautiful complexions. My complexion actually improved a great deal and looks great compared to the Acne I had when I ate dairy and meat, and my memory is great, sharp and on point, clarity awesome. You need to check out rawfood.com, books on the raw food diet. You will find many books written by people with beautiful skin, and whom I am sure can analyze quickly and accurately, like myself.
To each his own is my philosophy, but if you want to send info about b12 deficiency in veg. to prove some sort of point, make sure you have researched both the good and the bad.
It is possible to be vegan and get all your vitamins and minerals. I get everything I need. All it takes is research on food and nutrition.
