Years ago, I worked as a chemist and used EDTA to titrate calcium and at that time, EDTA was considered to be a neurotoxin.

That is correct, EDTA will only bind to one calcium so if it is bound, what is the sense of taking it?
Calcium is more reactive than Magnesium so it will push the Magnesium out and take its place.
