Hi everyone

Diet is so important for good colon health, always, always!
Please read my story: After a stressful weekend, I awoke one morning and found evidence of bleeding (rectally). No pain, just bloating, day and night. A friend recommended a gastroenterologist, and I went to find out what was happening. She recommended a colonoscopy, and I went for one a week later. As I was waking up from the anesthesia, the doctor came in, handed me papers with pictures of what she found. The pictures showed two sections of my colon that were ulcerated. She told me I had Ulcerative Colitis, and that it was not curable but controllable with meds. I was to take Rowasa enemas to help heal the colon. Then come back in three weeks. She was going to put me on something to take every day to keep it from coming back.

I asked if I should watch my diet, and she said no, it didn't make any difference (I found out later that was wrong advice). For more information, she said I could learn more about it on the internet. Hmmm

I did google searches on "how I cured my colitis," and found Sheldon Gensenway, along with the name and phone of his doctors and that was credential enough. After contacting Sheldon, I followed that diet to the letter, along with the doctor meds and the vitamin E enemas and the other vitamins. After 2 weeks I felt better, and after 4 weeks I stopped doctor meds and went to Florida on a 10 day vacation (continued the vit E enemas, and vitamins) I have been careful and made some big changes in my diet that I feel has made all the difference.

Some of these changes were: no dairy products (switched to soy, and take calcium tablets) Only exception was yogurt, occasionally because of the calcium. No more daily coffee (switched to Teecino, and tea), having one cup only one time a week, or for social occasions so I'm not addicted to it. Drastically limiting beef and pork) but enjoy chicken and turkey, and (wild) fish, like salmon, tillapia, and cod. MUCH more vegetables and fruit, and lots and lots of (filtered)water.
NO artificial sweeteners (I can use Stevia, which is herbal). Splenda is NOT a natural product and is not healthy, it gave me terrible cramps). Eat as much whole and unprocessed foods as you can get. Minimize white flour and Sugar consumption.
These changes have made all the difference, and I have not had problems with UC.

I found that the Mayo clinic (www.mayoclinic.com) has a link on its home page: (Healthy Living) then go to "Recipes." These recipes have very healthy ingredients and are very delicious and wholesome for the way that people are really supposed to eat.

To make a long story short, with thanks to Sheldon who was the cornerstone of this journey, I have not had any problem with colitis or any other digestive problem since last October, and feel great. I can now eat just about anything, but stay with the changes I have made and include exercise as part of the program as well.
Needless to say, I am not going back to that doctor. She just wanted me to come back and be her patient (forever), with all the unnecessary prescription medications that doctors are so well known for.
