He isn't a good person while a drug addict and alcoholic. Period. That good guy may be in there, but that's not who you know. You know the druggie who's out of control. You aren't helping either him or yourself by staying around. What you need to do is accept that this is going to hurt alot for quite awhile, and move on. No reconciliations. No getting together as friends. As long as he's on drugs he's off limits. Why? Because you are HURTING the guy you care about by staying! You want to help him, then leave. Don't allow him to continue in this path with you. It just throughs him off balance and makes things worse for his addictions. This is an example of why tough love is a good thing, for both of you.
