Yes, ovulation causes a higher temperature, not the other way around. The temperature is just an easy, consistent indicator of ovulation. I was concerned because of the temperature spike, which usually only occurs at ovulation. So, as a woman, having two reasons for my body temperature to rise by half a degree can be confusing when using as a method of birth control. I finally did ovulate, and my body temperature shot up even higher still. It is very strange to wake up and find my basal body temperature only half a degree off from my average middle of the day temp.
